We offer at Trauma Stop UK CIC refuge services for male victims of Domestic Abuse. We only have a small facility here in the North of England which consists of two first floor rooms and a ground floor facility that would suit an older male with perhaps some mobility issues yet could live independently without personal care as we are not CQC registered.
Men can make a self referral or they can be referred via statutory services, the police or Adult Social Care. Housing Benefit is accepted here and if a man is on benefits then he will be asked to contribute towards the utility bills in addition to the Housing benefit.
All male victims will be offered the chance to make a full police disclosure in time, however as a Police check will happen as part of admission it will be necessary for the man to disclose that he has children as part of the checking mechanism. Being a male victim being brought into a refuge facility WILL NOT stop a man from being able to maintain contact with his children. (Please refer to the Family Tree Centre CIC offer below).
Criteria for admission is as follows:
Male victim of Domestic Abuse aged 18-100.
The male will be subject to a police check to ensure they have NO notifiable persons of interest conflicts (such as convictions of being an offender or an abuser). He must not have addictions of substance, medication or alcohol misuse and no incidents of psychosis or a diagnosis of schizophrenia or bi polar disorder.
A DASH Risk assessment will be undertaken by the setting and a further needs based Risk Assessment of the individual will take place. Once assessment is passed then the individual will be asked to sign an emergency accommodation contract of behaviour for the duration of stay.
The support nominee for the individual will then house, provide clothing and basic initial food until the individual has been set up with their local food bank. The support worker will then make the person feel safe and give them their control to make their own life choices, register with healthcare providers, dentists and then apply for social housing in the longer term with the Local Authority.
Whilst in the emergency accommodation NO GUESTS other than healthcare professionals, statutory agencies or third sector support services are allowed. The premises is alcohol and smoke free and healthy eating and drinking is encouraged to ensure the individual once feeling safe adopts a healthy lifestyle and takes care of themselves.
The social Enteprise has close connections with an NACCC Accredited Children’s Contact Centre in the County Durham area that accepts referrals from the whole of the North East and this Centre also provides counselling and family mediation and Supervised contact for children with their parents. Trauma Stop UK CIC can facilitate contact with alienated parents through this Accredited Centre.
